Intensive Weaving Workshop is a programme focusing on acquiring skills and experiences on weaving looms. Our weaving room is equipped with both regional Chinese looms and a variety of modern looms including the user-friendly Saori loom.
Participants will learn to warp the two-heddle pedal loom and weave their own work. Those who already know the basics can try our traditional looms. Selected items from our archive will be shown to explain the weaving techniques in traditional textiles.
Participants are encouraged to make new work inspired by all the elements you will encounter: from tradition, from the beautiful canal town setting, from new materials, and from newly discovered techniques. Bring home an inspired, experimental mind.
Workshop Leader: Edith Cheung
A fashion designer by profession, Edith combines her knowledge in the industry with her own discovered niche interests, providing unique designs and solutions for clients. She reinvents herself constantly: starting from a fashion career in New York, then a decade of work in film costume, then to arts and craft research, textile art therapy work, and writing on textile subjects.
As Director of the Textile Division, Jinze Arts Centre, she manages the collection of over 5,000 pieces of Chinese textiles and costumes, and plans the programmes and events. She will introduce her unique way of self discovery creative weaving with an eye on tradition.
