Creative Research Assistant:

Who: Someone who is out of school, but still desires to continue their learning process. A graduate student, researcher, designer, or anyone looking to experience hands-on learning.

Use our resources creatively! We are looking for people to add their specific or broad knowledge of textile history, structures, chemistry, design, and more. As a creative research assistant, you will spend no less than 20 hours a week using our archive and putting your own spin on the purpose and value of our artifacts. Help us out by contributing new knowledge to our traditions and craft.

JZAC Creative Research Assistants will be required to produce the following outcomes:
  • A presentation of their added knowledge to the collection about specific pieces of their choice
     
  • A significant piece of research for publication, presentation, performance or exhibition
     
  • Research report and evaluation of residency
Some projects ideas to ignite your imagination:-

  1. For fashion students: Trace patterns to make replicas to experience in the ways of making and the effects of wearing them on the body.
     
  2. Unpick, unravel damaged pieces to understand the structure, material and make.
     
  3. Use our database to find special Miao items featured in the book “One Needle One Thread”. Create a study guide with reference to JZAC’s collection.
     
  4. Study various kinds of ancient and traditional looms and understand the how different fabrics are created on them.
     
  5. Study old woven swatches from Guizhou to make weave specs, and re-weave the fabric for yourself. Explore the role of numbers, pattern design and weaving techniques in these traditional textiles.
     
  6. Detail studies of the lining, patchwork, buttons, ornmantations, etc of different garments. Be inspired for your own designs.
     
  7. Study the variations of embroidery stitches. What are the different effects with change of materials, colours etc ?
     
  8. What are the cloth variations in different parts of China?
     
  9. Study of the ornamentation: the auspicious symbols, the techniques etc
     
  10. Research the silk radical, and it's hidden linguistic symbolism in Chinese words and ideas.
