BISS Puxi’s Artmaking Experience of Thangka Painting at the Jinze Art Center
On April 21, over twenty students from BISS attended the “Integration of the Three Virtues, Solemnity of the Middle Path: Jonang Thangka Exhibition” at the Jinze Art Center. After a tour of the exhibition, students assembled in the south gallery, where they sat before a Thangka Buddha, each with a canvas board in hand, and began to do measured drawings of the Buddha sculpture.
The measurement concerns the specific form of classical Buddhist statues; ancient Buddha statues were created to uniform standards, with the finger used as a scaling reference for other parts of the figure.
After finishing the outline drawing, students applied paint to the drawings, using brushwork to shape forms and refine the colouration.
In order to help international students better understand the function of proportion in Buddha sculptures, the Jinze Art Center provided copies of the famous ink drawing by Leonardo da Vinci of the perfect human body, which was based on depiction of the human form found in The Ten Books on Architecture by Vitruvius that was rediscovered in the 15th century.
The students, after completing the painting, were better able to appreciate the advanced wisdom and exquisite art techniques of the ancient Chinese artisans.
